If you’re set on discovering O’ahu, continue here for the must-do adventures in the heart of Hawaii! Honolulu is a vibrant city where you’ll find all the popular franchises and brands that are available on the mainland, making it easy to enjoy familiar favorites while exploring the island.

Stay

We wanted to try different types of accommodations during our trip, and in Honolulu, we stayed at a Waikiki Beach resort in an oceanfront room. The views from our balcony were breathtaking, and we spent the entire evening relaxing and soaking in the stunning ocean scenery. The resort also had rooftop swimming pools with both hot and cold water options, which was perfect for some quality family time with my son in the pool. After a relaxing evening, we went to bed early to rest up for the adventures planned for the next day.

Day 1: East Coast

1. Kailua Beach

Begin your day at Kailua Beach, known for its soft white sand and calm turquoise waters. Arrive early to find parking and enjoy the peaceful morning vibes.

2. Byodo-In Temple

Visit this serene Buddhist temple located at the base of the Koʻolau Mountains. The temple and its grounds are stunning, and the scenery is perfect for a break from the city. Don’t head back without ringing the giant Peace Bell for good luck, feed the koi fish in the pond. Wear well-covered clothing as this is a place of worship, and there’s a small 5$ entrance fee.

3. Kualoa Ranch

Explore Kualoa Ranch, a famous spot for movies like Jurassic Park. You can take a guided tour, ride ATVs, or hike scenic trails. Since we were traveling with an infant, we couldn’t join some of the activities, as they have age restrictions. Make sure to book your activities in advance, as they can fill up quickly.

4. Waimanalo Beach

Pack some snacks and water, as there are limited facilities nearby. Spend some time at this quiet, picturesque beach with powdery sand and clear waters.

5. Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline

Drive along the stunning Kaiwi Coastline, stopping at scenic viewpoints for breathtaking pictures. Be sure to stop at Makapuʻu Point Lookout for panoramic ocean views, Continue to the Sunset view part for the best sunset views.

Day 2: West Coast

6. Hilton Hawaiian Village: We began our day with a relaxing stroll through this village, which has everything you need—shopping, restaurants, water activities, and more.

7. Koko Crater Arch Trail: A short 1-mile round trip hike, but it gets challenging as you walk across lava rocks. It offers great views, but be prepared for a bit of a climb.

8. Hanauma Bay: This is one of my favorite beaches for snorkeling. To protect the area from overtourism, they limit the number of visitors, so be sure to make a reservation in advance. There’s a $25 entry fee for non-residents, but it’s totally worth it. While there’s a snack bar, I recommend bringing your own snacks, beach towels, and an umbrella for a more comfortable experience. We had the perfect relaxing time here after our morning hike.

Our time in Honolulu ended up being a bit shorter than planned because I came down with pink eye. I had to schedule a doctor’s visit to make sure we could continue with our trip safely. If you’re up for it, you can definitely explore all 8 of these must-visit stops in just a day to a day and a half. You’ll need to be a bit aggressive with your itinerary, but it’s totally doable if you’re ready to make the most of your time on the island.

O’ahu is a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty, and I hope this guide inspires your island journey. From stunning coastal views to vibrant city vibes, there’s so much to experience here.
