Stay

Our travel plans were spontaneous, and we couldn’t secure the best prices in Maui, where we first arrived. We ended up staying at the Courtyard By Marriott for $350 per night. It wasn’t a fancy option, but with limited availability, we had no choice. We stayed there for five nights.

Day 1: Arrival in Maui and sunset

We landed in Maui and picked up our rental car using the tram service from the airport to the rental area. For dinner, we went to Monsoon India. The food was decent, but we mainly chose it for the stunning sunset views. It’s located right on the shore, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the evening after a long flight.

Day 2: Road to Hana

This route combines natural beauty, easy hikes, and cultural stops, making it a memorable day!

1. Ho’okipa Beach
We started our journey at Ho’okipa Beach, known for its scenic beauty and a great spot to watch surfers. It’s a peaceful place to relax and take in the ocean views.

2. Twin Falls (4-mile round trip)
The Twin Falls hike is about 4 miles round trip. A caution sign at the start suggested it was tough, but we found it manageable. The hike is worth it for the beautiful falls and the large pool where you can take a dip in cool, fresh water. We didn’t swim but enjoyed the serene atmosphere. Allow about 2 hours for this stop.

3. Bamboo Forest Hike
Unfortunately, we couldn’t complete this hike, heavy rain the previous day had made the trail muddy, slippery, and difficult to navigate. The trail isn’t well-marked, and it’s easy to feel lost in the dense forest, which feels like a maze.

4. Garden of Eden
We spent about 40 minutes exploring its well-maintained walking trails, panoramic views, waterfall overlooks, and picnic areas. The garden also has botanical labels for plant lovers and a 2-mile scenic drive-through trail.

5. Ke‘anae Lookout
The lookout offers incredible views of the rugged coastline. It’s a perfect spot to pause, take pictures, and enjoy the beauty of nature.

6. Pua‘a Ka‘a Falls & Hanawi Falls
These waterfalls are quick stops along the way, offering stunning views and a chance to stretch your legs. Pua‘a Ka‘a Falls even has a small pool where you can dip your feet.

7. Aunty Sandy’s Banana Bread
On our way back, we stopped at Aunty Sandy’s for their famous banana bread. It’s an absolute must-try when driving the Road to Hana. The warm, freshly baked bread was the perfect end to a long day of adventure.

Day 3: Road to Hana

This day combines adventure, relaxation, and some of the most iconic spots along the Hana Highway

1. Hana Lava Tube
Our first stop was the Hana Lava Tube, where you can explore fascinating underground lava formations. The entrance fee is $15 per person. It’s a unique experience to walk through this natural tunnel and learn about its volcanic history.

2. Hana Farms
For lunch, we stopped at Hana Farms. The food here is incredible! I tried a vibrant and delicious salad, and the ambiance of the open-air restaurant added to the charm. It’s a must-visit for a fresh and flavorful meal.

3. Wai‘anapanapa Black Sand Beach
4. Hamoa Beach

5. Paihi Falls & Wailua Falls
These waterfalls are quick but stunning stops along the highway. Paihi Falls is a small but charming cascade, while Wailua Falls is a taller, more dramatic sight. Both are great for photos or a brief pause to enjoy nature.

6. Haleakalā National Park (Kipahulu District)
The entrance fee is $30 per vehicle and is well worth it for the experiences inside.

Kūloa Point Trail: This is an easy 0.5-mile loop that leads to the Ohe‘o Gulch, also known as the Seven Sacred Pools. It’s a short and scenic walk suitable for everyone.

Pipiwai Trail: This 4-mile round trip hike is the highlight of the park and takes about 3-5 hours to complete. Along the way, you’ll encounter:

  • A massive banyan tree, the largest in the U.S., around the 0.5-mile mark.
  • Makahiku Falls, is a beautiful waterfall visible from a viewpoint.
  • The Bamboo Forest, about 1 mile in, where tall bamboo stalks create an enchanting tunnel-like atmosphere.
  • Waimoku Falls at the end of the trail—a towering 400-foot waterfall that is stunning.

Since we couldn’t do the Bamboo Forest hike the previous day, we decided to hike just to its start to get a feel for it before turning back.

Day 4: West MAUI

This day was all about enjoying Maui’s scenic coastal beauty and visiting some of its most picturesque spots. Take your time and enjoy the journey at your own pace.

1. Kahakuloa Beach
This beach is a hidden gem tucked away in a small village. The drive to get here offers breathtaking views of the coastline. It’s a great spot for a peaceful break and some stunning photos.

2. Olivine Pools
These natural tide pools are formed in lava rock and offer a unique view of Maui’s rugged shoreline.

3. Nakalele Blowhole
A fascinating natural phenomenon, the blowhole shoots water high into the air when the waves hit just right. Be careful not to get too close, but it’s worth stopping to see.

4. Kapalua Coastal Trail
This easy and scenic walking trail hugs the coastline and provides gorgeous ocean views.

5. Lahaina
This historic town is perfect for a mid-day stop. Stroll along Front Street, grab a bite to eat, and explore shops, art galleries, and landmarks like the iconic Banyan Tree Court.

6. Wailea Beach
One of Maui’s most beautiful beaches, Wailea is ideal for lounging, swimming, or just enjoying the golden sand and crystal-clear waters.

7. Maluaka Beach
Often referred to as “Turtle Town,” this beach is known for its calm waters and the chance to spot sea turtles while snorkeling. Even if you don’t snorkel, it’s a peaceful spot to relax.

Day 5: Central MAUI

This day was a mix of stunning scenic views, relaxing moments, and exploring local gems making it a memorable way to wrap up our time on Maui. Here’s what we did:

1. Haleakalā Summit
The drive to Haleakalā’s summit was an unforgettable experience. As we climbed higher, we found ourselves above the clouds, surrounded by breathtaking views. The road is winding, so take your time and enjoy the journey. Once at the top, the views are worth it. If you’re visiting during sunrise or sunset, be sure to check reservation requirements ahead of time. Pack a jacket, temperatures at the summit can be chilly, even during the day.

2. Kula Botanical Garden
This peaceful garden is a great stop to enjoy Maui’s diverse flora. The trails are easy to walk, and the colorful plants and flowers make it a perfect spot for photos. There’s also a koi pond and some native Hawaiian plants that are unique to the island.

3. Hawaii Sea Spirits Organic Farm & Distillery
This was such a fun and relaxing stop! The distillery offers a one-of-a-kind tasting experience where you can sample their handcrafted spirits, including vodka and rum made from local ingredients. The atmosphere is laid-back, and their pizzas were a delicious surprise—crispy, fresh, and full of flavor. Consider booking a tour in advance to learn about their distilling process.

4. Paia Town
Before wrapping up our time in Maui, we spent some time exploring the charming town of Paia. This laid-back spot is full of unique shops, cafes, and local art. A highlight of our visit was dining at Paia Fish Market. Even as someone who doesn’t usually eat fish, I was blown away by their food. It was fresh, flavorful, and instantly became one of my favorite meals of the trip, expect a bit of wait, but it’s worth it.

After exploring Paia, we had dinner and returned to our hotel to pack for the next island. We had booked a Southwest Airlines flight to O’ahu/Honolulu for the following day. Early the next morning, we drove to the airport, returned our rental car, and flew to Honolulu.

I hope this guide to exploring Maui helps you make the most of your time on this beautiful island! From scenic beaches to adventurous hikes, Maui truly offers something for everyone.
